The megacity Rises to Hazardous Smog After Diwali
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Various sections of Delhi registered an AQI above 500, which equals 10x the healthy limit recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x above healthy levels.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Developments
Since 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that blankets the capital as colder weather begins.
Nevertheless recently, the recently formed local leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a easing of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and environment".
Court Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed contamination peaking around late evening to the most severe measurements seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Effects
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Near the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the environment has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Contamination Factors
The problem in the city is caused by a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating toxic haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various studies.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k early deaths each year in the capital.
