Grief as Renowned South African DJ Killed in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the forty-year-old entertainer was approached by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.
The purpose of the shooting has not been established and no arrests have been made, according to authorities.
How It Happened
Authorities said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a premises close to the city center landmark.
He had been present for hours at the property managing the implementation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.
"The report indicates the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.
Security camera video showed a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what looked like a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and it was not a robbery during the incident.
Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the attack, and officers have been attempting to locate them to establish their location," added an official.
Outpouring of Grief
His sister, Nicole Stock, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.
"I am devastated. I don't have words," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were willing to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."
She urged the community to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's young family.
His Professional Legacy
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that premiered on a popular local TV network.
Beyond his work in broadcasting, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including security provision, supplying elite guarding services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in property management and was involved in tenant removals.
National Shock
His murder has sent the nation reeling and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and political parties.
A government minister commented he was angry and saddened by Stock's murder.
"He was forthright without fear or favour. He even criticized me and my decisions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we ought to be," was his tribute.
A party figurehead commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director said that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a release, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his influence "will endure".
