Food Benefits Scheduled to Cease for 41 Million During Prolonged Government Closure
The United States Department of Agriculture announced on Saturday that SNAP funds through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed during the coming month because of the continuing federal closure.
Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day
The federal closure lasted three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives urging the USDA to utilize reserve accounts to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.
âUltimately, the well has run dry,â the department confirmed. âAt this time, no payments will be distributedâ beginning in November.
Widespread Impact
More than 41 million individuals rely on these monthly payments, per federal data. In certain states, like New Mexico, reliance on SNAP affects one-fifth of the population.
Documents reviewed by a major news agency indicated that federal authorities would not access contingency funding for November food benefits.
Legislative Deadlock
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree about the way to support and resume federal agencies.
A statement from the head of a prominent policy organization noted that federal leadership had chances to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.
âOfficials were able and expected to made moves before now to be prepared to use these funds,â the comments added. âConversely, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantageâ as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a funding package that would reopen federal functions.
Local Responses
Governors in Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols recently to make money available for hunger relief preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
