Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Message That Provoked the Debate
The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.
"Like us, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Furious Response
The video message seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats released a unified announcement condemning the remarks.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous national pride and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these unhinged digital publications and retract his aggressive language before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this United States and took an oath to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and censure the president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the execution of government members."
He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
Administration Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative said. "There are current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
